English Whisky has secured protected Geographical Indication (GI) status, marking a major milestone for a rapidly expanding sector that has developed into one of England’s leading food and drink success stories.
The new designation formally recognises English Whisky as a distinct whisky category, protecting its provenance and production characteristics and providing greater recognition for producers that have helped establish the sector over recent years.
More than 70 distilleries are now producing English Whisky, up from 46 in 2023, with bottles exported to more than 30 countries. Industry estimates suggest maturing stocks held in casks across England are worth around £1 billion, highlighting the scale of investment in the category.
Distilleries stretching from Cornwall to Northumberland are supporting skilled jobs, attracting visitors and driving investment in local communities.
“Standing proudly alongside Scotch, Welsh and Irish whiskies, this new protected status is recognition of English Whisky’s distinctive character alongside the expert craftsmanship that goes into its production,” Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle said.
“It’s a milestone that will be felt far beyond the distillery gates, bringing jobs, investment and pride to communities across the country.”
The application was led by the English Whisky Guild on behalf of its member distilleries, bringing producers together to secure formal recognition of the category’s qualities, provenance and growing international reputation.
Morag Garden, CEO of the English Whisky Guild, said the GI designation was a “landmark achievement” and recognition of the quality and innovation within the industry.
“We are grateful to Defra and to everyone who contributed to this collaborative effort,” she said. “This milestone will support future growth and international recognition for English Whisky.”
English Whisky now joins Scotch, Welsh and Irish whiskies as a recognised and protected whisky category.
Producers will need to be verified under HMRC’s Spirit Drink Verification Scheme to use the new protected status.
