A shopkeeper in Eltham has been recognised for his bravery after he wrestled with a man who had entered his place of work, demanded money and threatened him with a gun last year in December. A swift police investigation ensured the attacker was caught and jailed for more than six years.

According to local reports, Daniel Lee raided Shaw Bridge Local, a small shop on Shawbrooke Road in Eltham, on December 10 holding a firearm.

CCTV footage of the store shows the masked man pointing the gun to the victim’s head, as well as assaulting him with the butt of the gun several times, causing minor injuries to his head. The shopkeeper chased the masked man out of the shop, before he fled the scene on a bicycle holding the shop cash drawer.

At Woolwich Crown Court on April 19, it was heard that Lee stole an iPhone from the counter and a Samsung phone from the victim’s inside jacket pocket, before fleeing the scene on a bicycle, holding the shop cash drawer.

He was later seen on a footpath near the newsagent attempting to break open the cash drawer using the butt of the gun. He discarded the pair of gloves on the footpath, which were later discovered by officers and found to obtain both the DNA of the victim and the defendant.

The man, identified as Daniel Lee, was arrested in Eltham on Dec 28 last year, just 18 days after the offence. He was charged and subsequently pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to commit a schedule one offence at Woolwich Crown Court. He was sentenced to six years and four months in jail.

The Judge awarded the Sheriff’s Award for Bravery to the victim as well as another member of the public who sought to intervene, the police stated on social media.
