Bestway Retail has officially unveiled a newly transformed Costcutter store in Barmulloch, Glasgow, in partnership with leading independent retailer Girish Jeeva, marking a major milestone in the store’s next phase of growth.

Following a £100,000 investment programme, the high-performing store has now relaunched under the Costcutter fascia, with a significantly enhanced offer designed to drive footfall, increase basket spend and better serve the local community.

The relaunch is already delivering strong results. Store sales have increased by 16% following the transformation – significantly outperforming the wider convenience market, which declined by 3% in the first quarter, placing the store 19% ahead of the market trend.

At the same time, in-store margin has improved by 6%, driven by strong performance across fresh food, grocery and household categories, underlining the commercial impact of the supply switch, strengthened ranging and refit.

The relaunch sees a substantial expansion of the fresh and chilled range, growing from 12 metres to 18.5 metres, alongside the introduction of a new Gelato counter and healthier living range, including protein milkshakes, protein bars and a new healthy ready meals offer.

The upgraded proposition is further strengthened by access to Co-op own-brand lines, which now have a significantly increased presence in-store following the refit. Own label performance is particularly strong, delivering high margins, providing both value for customers and improved profitability for the retailer.

The store layout has also been significantly improved to create a more intuitive and engaging shopping experience for customers, supporting easier navigation and stronger in-store visibility across key categories.

As part of the transformation, the store is now open 24 hours a day, further enhancing convenience and ensuring it meets the needs of the local community around the clock.

Jamie Davison, Retail Director at Bestway Retail, said: “We’re incredibly proud to see Girish’s new-look Costcutter store come to life. This is exactly what our model is designed to deliver – progressive retailers investing in their stores, supported by the strength of the Costcutter brand and our wider retail proposition.

“The results are very encouraging with strong sales growth, improved margins and a significantly enhanced customer offer. Girish has created a standout store for the Barmulloch community, with a clear focus on fresh, healthier choices and a greatly improved shopping experience. It’s a fantastic example of what can be achieved when a highly motivated retailer and store team is matched with the right offer and support.”

The launch event itself saw fantastic support from our supply partners across the industry, including Coca-Cola and AU Vodka, alongside rapid delivery partner Snappy Shopper, reflecting the scale o f backing for Girish, the store and its ambitious plans for continued growth.

Girish Jeeva said: “This relaunch is a huge moment for us. We’ve invested heavily to create a store that truly meets the needs of our customers – from a much stronger fresh and chilled range to healthier options and a significantly improved layout.

“We’re already seeing the impact in both sales and margins, and the response from customers has been incredibly positive. Having so many key supplier partners here to support the launch has made it even more special. We’re excited about what comes next as we continue to build on this momentum with Costcutter.”

Looking ahead, Girish is exploring the introduction of Bestway Retail’s hybrid format, incorporating a specialist beers, wines and spirits offer within the store, as part of a phased development plan.

Jamie added: “This is just the beginning. Girish has a clear vision for the future of the store, and we’re excited to continue collaborating with him as he continues to develop and innovate.

“Retailers like Girish continue to demonstrate the strength of independent retail – combining local insight with bold investment to deliver outstanding stores for their communities.”
