Co-op has become the first grocer in the UK to partner with Deliveroo Express, rolling out the delivery platform’s new white label solution to hundreds of its convenience stores.

Deliveroo Express was launched in April to enable grocers and other retailers to offer on-demand delivery directly through their own online channels.

It leverages Deliveroo’s logistics technology and rider network to provide new delivery options for retailers, having operated a similar white label delivery solution for restaurants since 2020. Tesco was the first brand to partner with Deliveroo Express, using it for its rapid delivery Whoosh service in Ireland.

Consumers in the UK ordering online deliveries through Co-op’s own online shop will now be supported by Deliveroo Express, with the platform’s infrastructure fulfilling orders from hundreds of the convenience retailer’s sites.

Co-op was Deliveroo’s first major grocery partner when it launched its grocery business in 2018. The partnership has since grown significantly, and customers can now order Co-op groceries from the convenience retailer’s own online shop or through the Deliveroo platform from nearly 1,400 stores.

Deliveroo recently launched Co-op’s membership benefits on its app, enabling the society’s members to benefit from member price savings on their Deliveroo orders.

“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Co-op as they adopt our white label delivery solution, supporting fast and reliable on-demand deliveries through their existing website,” said Suzy McClintock, VP of New Verticals at Deliveroo.

“Deliveroo Express is the next step in our mission to transform on-demand delivery, ensuring we remain the partner for growth, for grocers and retailers alike, helping them reach more consumers through their own online channels.”

Chris Conway, Co-op Quick Commerce Director, added, “Growing our quick commerce channel is a core part of our strategic approach, and I am delighted to build on our long-standing and successful partnership with Deliveroo.

“Working together, we are focused on meeting the evolving needs of shoppers. This includes making the fast and reliable delivery of Co-op groceries available to more communities and creating value through member price savings as we see consumer appetite for quick and convenient grocery delivery from their local Co-op continue to grow.”

An estimated 86 per cent of the UK population now has access to Co-op groceries online, through its own online shop and partners. The retailer has ambitions to grow to more than 30 per cent share of the quick commerce grocery market.

Meanwhile, Deliveroo’s grocery business has seen strong growth since its launch seven years ago, reaching 16 per cent of gross transaction value (GTV) and reporting strong double-digit growth in 2024, having built partnerships with numerous supermarkets, including Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Whole Foods, NISA, and SPAR.
