CMA clears Danone’s acquisition of Harrogate Water Brands

James Cain, Harrogate Water chief executive and James Pearson, managing director of Danone Waters UK and Ireland

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) today cleared the acquisition of British water brand Harrogate Spring Water by Danone.

The deal announced in February will see the French multinational acquiring a majority stake in Harrogate Water through a UK subsidiary.

Harrogate Water is among the oldest bottled water brands in Britain with a spa history dating back to 1571 and bottling started in 1740. The current owners, the Cain family, are expected to remain as minority shareholders.

Danone, home to iconic brands like evian and Volvic, has said that it hopes to further develop Danone Waters’ position in the UK and support future growth for the Harrogate Water portfolio, which has a strong foothold in foodservice and on-the go sectors.
