A convenience store in Sparkhill was struck with armed raiders who swiped cash and cigarettes during an early morning robbery last week. Police is still investigating the raid.

According to local reports, a group of armed men entered 5 Star Grocery and Convenience Store on Ladypool Road in Sparkhill and smashed a window before fleeing the scene with a cash till and cigarettes. The incident happened during the early morning hours of March 18.

West Midlands Police is investigating the incident, but confirmed no-one was injured in the raid.

A police spokesperson said, “We’re investigating after a cash till and cigarettes were stolen from a convenience store in Ladypool Road at just before 3.30am on March 18. A group armed with weapons entered the shop and smashed a window before making off with the items. No-one was injured.”

The armed robbery is the second violent incident at a Sparkhill shop in the past month, with a man suffering serious injuries in a hammer attack at a shop on Stratford Road in February. The robbery comes amid a sharp rise in shoplifting offences across the West Midlands.

According to police figures, there were five reports of robbery reported to West Midlands Police in Sparkbrook in January 2024. There were a further 16 reports of theft, and 24 reports of criminal damage.
