Asian Trader Awards 2025: Andy Campbell chosen Impulse Retailer of the Year

Andy Campbell, who runs the Go Local Extra Hursthead Convenience store in Cheadle, Stockport, has won the Impulse Retailer of the Year 2025 award, supported by pladis, at the prestigious Asian Trader Awards ceremony held in London on November 5.

Andy has been in retail for 37 years and his passion for the trade is truly infectious, but it’s his store that really sets him apart. Bright, welcoming, and immaculately presented, every corner is thoughtfully designed and superbly merchandised.

“It stands as a shining example of how an independent retail outlet should look and feel — a benchmark for excellence and inspiration to all retailers,” the judges noted.

Sharing his perspective on what drives sales in the ever-competitive impulse category, Andy said: “Impulse categories are always up for debate, so to choose my favourite is a difficult ask. I would have to say new confectionery products placed in strategic locations within the store consistently deliver strong sales and help to increase basket spend.”

However, he added, the best-performing impulse category has to be alcohol, which draws customer attention through eye-catching displays, competitive pricing, and exciting giveaways. “This combination not only boosts impulse purchases but also drives overall store performance,” he said.

Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant delivering his keynote address at Asian Trader Awards 2025

Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant, who worked at a newsagent as a teenager, attended as the chief guest at the ceremony, which celebrated excellence in convenience retail across the UK.

Drawing on his own early experience, he spoke about the hard work and long hours that go into running a local store – a sentiment that clearly resonated with many in the audience. Now in its 36th year, the event continued its tradition of recognising outstanding achievements in the sector.

TV presenter Nikki Bedi hosted the event, which also saw 14 other retailers being honoured in different categories.

United Wholesale’s depot in Rainham, Essex won the Wholesale Depot of the Year award. Six new product launches from the last year, voted for by the retailers, were also feted.

Ramniklal Solanki Editor’s Award, instituted in the memory of Ramniklal Solanki CBE, founder of Asian Trader publisher Asian Media Group, went to Andrew Yaxley, Chief Executive Officer, Booker Group.

The event also raised funds for Lepra, a charity that supports people affected by leprosy.
