Abasolo Mexican-made whisky arrives in the UK

Abasolo, an ultra-premium whisky brand will be served up in shops and bars for the first in the UK later this month.

Distilled in Mexico, Abasolo has been acclaimed by experts at Casa Lumbre as the nation’s first purpose-built whisky, made from 100% Mexican corn.

The 43% ABV spirit launches alongside another corn-based liqueur named Nixta (30% ABV), which can be combined in a refreshing cocktail.

Although Mexico is traditionally associated with tequila, whisky is the country’s second most popular drink.

Nick Gillett, managing director for Mangrove UK said: “There is a deep fascination in the UK with Mexican culture and adventurous and worldly whisky connoisseurs will welcome the chance to add this world whisky to their collection.

“These brands are premium in quality and taste and can be served neat, mixed for a long drink or as a cocktail.”

Abasolo whisky is double distilled in handcrafted copper stills and finished in new toasted and used oak casks.

A process steeped in Mesoamerican history called nixtamalization, which has never been used before in spirit production, is applied to draw out the bold flavours of the corn.

The centuries old technique involves soaking and cooking the corn in alkaline solution before it’s washed and hulled, unlocking the flavours and aromas of the ancient crops.

Serving Tips for the Mexican-made whisky include serving it neat, with a simple orange slice, or long with ginger-beer or coconut water or as a cocktail old fashioned or sour.

To buy Abasolo 700ml (£34.99 RSP) and Nixta 700ml (£29.99 RSP), visit www.abasolowhisky.com and www.nixtalicor.com respectfully.

Bira (the), which represents 6,000 independent retailers across the UK, says the extension of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) regulations will finally create a level playing field between high street and online sellers.

The research suggests that a collective £634m was spent on Small Business Saturday in-store and online. The survey of 4,000 adults revealed average spend per person on the day was the highest since 2020, with top reasons for shopping small including wanting to support business owners on the high street (53 per cent) and recognising that it has been a tough period for small businesses (39 per cent). Encouragingly, seven in 10 (70 per cent) adults surveyed said they will continue to shop small next year because of the positive impact these businesses have on local communities.
