Morrisons mocked on Twitter for scrapping ‘use-by’ dates from milk packaging

Morrisons’s new move, to scrap “use by” date from milk packaging and asking shoppers to do the sniff test instead, is being met with a mixed response with some shoppers accusing the supermarket of tampering its health standards.

Morrison on Sunday (9) announced that it will remove “use-by” dates from milk packaging at the end of the month in an attempt to save millions of pints from being thrown away unnecessarily every year.

The supermarket is asking customers to use a simple and time-honoured test to work out if milk is usable by sniffing it. Bottles sold by the retailer will still carry “best before” dates that will give an indication of when the milk will have the best taste, but it can often still be used safely for several days after that point.

The announcement is being met with a mixed response on social media as questions are being raised of bringing such a move amid Covid-19 surge.

“So Morrisons is going to get rid of the “use by” dates on the milk they sell,” tweets an user. “Maybe they should get rid of health standards in general, and rather than have a “sniff test“, introduce the “Did you die? No? Then, it was ok, wasn’t it?!” test, instead.”

“So if you have #Covid and lost your taste and smell, how the hell can you determine if the milk has gone bad if there is no date. This is not the time and place to determine whether the use by date should be remove.” tweets another user.

“Morrisons supermarket scraps ‘use by’ date on milk in favour of “sniff test“, those whose sense of smell has been impaired by COVID are advised to use the alternative ‘chunky texture’ test…,” said another tweet.
