Van Hunks launches South African equivalents to Champagne in UK

Van Hunks has announced the launch of Brut and Rosé Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) Sparkling Wine in the UK, a range of South African sparkling wine equivalents to Champagne from Stellenbosch.

Hand crafted using a traditional method identical to Méthode Champenoise, Van Hunks MCC’s are bottle fermented in small batches and matured in contact with the lees for approximately 30 months.

“Champagne and sparkling wine consumption rose approximately 4 per cent in 2019 according to the Beverage Information and Insights Group, reaching 24.9 million nine-litre case sales. This marks the category’s 18th consecutive year of growth since 2002 and we believe the time is right to introduce consumers to the exciting world of South African MCC’s,” Tom Gamborg, Founder, Van Hunks and Skäl Drinks SA Ltd, said.

“We have focused on the beauty of our product and brand story and we believe that there is a great opportunity for high quality MCC’s in the UK to rival other styles of sparkling wine and Champagne on quality and on price and this is why we are extending the Van Hunks range into the Sparkling Wine category. Van Hunks is a brand that will put MCC and the great liquid on the map.”

Van Hunks MCC Sparkling Wines are produced at Villiera Wines in the Western Cape, where 12th generation winemaker and Van Hunks co-founder Matthew Krone finishes the product to his high standards.

Van Hunks Brut has vivacious cascading bubbles, laced with a fresh, racy zestiness and delicate fruit, while Van Hunks Rosé is a combination of Pinot Noir and the elegance of Chardonnay, with the addition of South Africa’s Pinotage, offering a rich and long flavourful finish.

The two sparkling wines join the Van Hunks range of Brut and Rosé Sparkling Mead, which launched in the UK in September 2020.

Van Hunks Brut and Rosé MCC Sparkling Wines RRP: £20 for 75cl bottle. ABV: 12%.
