Plans to open a Sainsbury’s in Saltaire, near Bradford, will not be going ahead.
In 2016 the supermarket giant was granted planning permission to build a 360 square metre Sainsbury’s Local on Bingley Road – a site that is currently home to a car wash.
The plans proved hugely controversial with hundreds of people objecting.
Many objectors claimed the store would harm existing businesses in the village.
After the planning meeting that approved the scheme, objectors said the decision was a “disgrace” and called for planning law to be changed to give local residents’ opinions more weight.
However, work on the scheme never started, and the planning permission has since expired.
When asked if there were still plans to open a store in the town, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Sainsbury’s currently doesn’t have any plans to invest in a new Sainsbury’s Local in Saltaire.
“The local community can visit us at our convenience store in Bingley or our supermarket around three miles away off Harrogate Road.”
