Police has issued an appeal for witnesses in connection with a shop robbery at Rawtenstall.

The incident happened at around 5:50pm on Sunday (1 March) at Hoopers Newsagents on Bury Road in Rawtenstall, Rossendale.

Two men, with their faces covered and carrying an axe and a pole, made demands to the shop assistant for money.

“The shop assistant who was threatened is understandably shaken by her ordeal,” commented DS Sarah Hargreaves from Burnley CID.

The offenders fled the scene with a small amount of cash from the till when a customer confronted them.

“I am keen to trace a man who chased the offenders away from the scene and a woman who was stood outside and saw them run away,” Hargreaves said.

Officers believe a third man remained outside the shop, acting as a lookout. The trio is seen running off in the direction of the Firepit pub after the incident.

Police has released CCTV visuals of the two suspects.

“We know that both of the men who went inside were white and spoke with a local accent. One of them was wearing a military style trench coat,” Hargreaves added.
