Post Office confirms probe against chief executive

    Nick Read

Post Office has on Wednesday confirmed that its group chief executive Nick Read is facing an internal investigation, after former chairman Henry Staunton revealed it to MPs.

Speaking at an evidence session by the Business and Trade Select Committee of the Commons on Tuesday, Staunton, who has been removed by the business secretary Kemi Badenoch last month citing bullying allegations, said there was actually an investigation into Read.

He added that Read wanted to resign over his pay and his own behaviour was only referenced once in an 80-page document about Read.

The Post Office confirmed there were complaints against Read and other staff, but denied he never offered to resign.

“Like many of you, I know that Nick Read has at times felt the weight of Post Office’s awful history on his shoulders. It is no surprise, and is entirely appropriate, that he will have discussed this, in confidence, with the former chairman. However, to my knowledge he has never tendered his resignation and he continues to accept leadership responsibility for the challenges that we are all working on each day,” Ben Tidswell, senior independent director at Post Office board, said in a message to Post Office staff.

“Post Office has received a complaint against a number of people within the organisation – Nick is one of those employees – and I am sure you will all agree that Post Office should investigate every complaint with due process. Nick accepts this and has cooperated fully with the investigation,” he added.

The Commons committee was discussing the progress on redress to Post Office Horizon scandal victims.
