A couple who run a Nisa store and raised more than £1.2 million for the National Lottery Good Causes have been awarded a plaque for their fundraising efforts.

Retailers Mike and Nisha Ladwa, who are proprietors of the c-store on Courtlands Drive, Watford, was presented with their award by MP Dean Russell on Friday, 18th September.

CEO of National Lottery operator Camelot, Nigel Railton was also in attendance to mark the special occasion.

Speaking about Mr and Mrs Ladwa’s charity fundraising, Mr Russell said: “Thanks to National Lottery players and to independent shops like the Nisa on Courtlands Drive, over £37 million has been raised for National Lottery charities and Good Causes in Watford alone since 1994, while the total raised for projects across the UK now exceeds £41 billion.

“It’s been a tough time for retail recently, but I would encourage people to get out and about safely – to support your local shops and small businesses, if you can.”

Camelot CEO, Nigel Railton, added: “Independent retailers are vitally important to the success of The National Lottery, providing a great service to our players across the country.

“In these difficult times, it is great to be able to celebrate their achievements and, today in particular, the huge contribution of Mike and his customers.

“With the ongoing challenges retailers are facing, it is more important than ever to recognise those who go above and beyond to serve their customers and communities.

“Thanks to National Lottery retailers and players, an average of £30 million is raised every week for Good Causes across the UK.

“Given what the country is going through, this is even more important right now, with up to £600 million in National Lottery funding being used by charities and organisations to help those affected by coronavirus – including £300 million to support the most vulnerable in communities across the UK.”

Mr Ladwa also shared his thoughts on his stores award, saying: “I’m extremely proud that my customers have been able to help raise such a huge amount for Good Causes, especially given that the money goes to local projects here in Watford and right around the UK.

“I’ve been a National Lottery retailer since the very first draw, so it means a lot to have been awarded with this plaque – it gives me a real sense of achievement.”
