Since launching in May 2024, NewstrAid’s Retailer Support Scheme has provided vital financial, emotional and practical support to more than 130 retailers and shop workers across the UK.
Created specifically to support those working in the sale of newspapers and magazines, the scheme focuses on a sector that represents around 60 per cent of the people the charity helps each year. It is designed to assist individuals whose income has been affected by unexpected changes in their personal circumstances.
Support delivered through the scheme has helped people dealing with illness, bereavement, disability and significant changes at home, with assistance ranging from financial grants to practical guidance and emotional support.
“Over the last 18 months we’ve supported retailers and shop workers facing a wide range of challenges,” said Welfare Manager Katie Babooram. “While many people come to us for financial help, others need practical advice or emotional support to help them navigate a particularly difficult period in their lives.”
Since its launch, the scheme has paid out around £74,000 to those in need. However, NewstrAid is keen to raise awareness of the support available, particularly among shop workers and assistants who may not realise they are eligible.
“We’ve recently spoken to business owners who were unaware that the scheme can also support their staff,” Katie added. “Anyone who has worked in the sale of newspapers and magazines can approach us for practical and emotional support. For financial assistance, applicants need to have worked in the sector for at least two years and have savings of less than £10,000.”
