A man, whose robbery attempt was foiled by a Wales convenience store owner who later also helped police, has been sentenced to a total of four years and eight months imprisonment.
The incident happened on March 5 when the man named Shaun Davies entered the Family Choice Bargains convenience store in Aberbargoed, Caerphilly in Wales after drawing up a half baked plan to rob the store on his phone.
After entering the shop, in which two other customers were present, Davies told Logeswaran “I’ve got a machete” and pulled it out of his jacket. He instructed him to give him cash but the shop worker responded “No”, to which Davies said, “Don’t say anything I’ve got a machete”, reports said.
However, Logeswaran denied Davies’ demands and instead tried to close the shutters, after which Davies grabbed four cans of Carling before squeezing through the closing shutters and making a hasty exit.
Logeswaran, on the other hand, had easily recognised Davies, who was a regular customer at his store, and promptly phoned the police. He was also recognised by a police officer who viewed CCTV of the robbery.
The defendant later pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article. The court heard he had numerous previous convictions for violent offences including attempted wounding with a screwdriver, possession of an offensive weapon, robbery, assaulting an emergency worker, and threatening people with a knife at Bargoed railway station.
Mentioning that the defendant had “no qualms” committing the robbery despite their being customers in the shop and it was his second robbery offence, Judge Rhys Rowlands sentenced Davies to a total of four years and eight months imprisonment, reports said.
