A man has been arrested after an attempted robbery in a convenience store in Boscombe.
It was in reports earlier that a Convenience Store in Christchurch Road in Boscombe at around 1.10 am on January 2. The man approached a member of staff at the till and then allegedly asked for money from the till.
The man reportedly assaulted the staff member, before leaving the store empty handed. The staff member suffered injuries but did not require hospital treatment.
After enquiries and a CCTV appeal, a 51-year-old man from Bournemouth was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. He has been released on police bail as further enquiries are carried out.
It comes a month after Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) released its Voice of Local Shops survey which shows that most (63 per cent) of independent retailers reported that theft in their businesses had either increased (35 per cent) or stayed the same (28 per cent) over the last year.
ACS further claims the ‘theft index’ has been reasonably steady from 2016 through to early 2021, but has since gradually risen to now record highs amid ongoing inflation and the cost-of-living crisis.
Figures from the ACS 2022 Crime Report show that convenience stores spent over £246m in the previous year on crime prevention measures like CCTV, security staff and alarm systems.
