Laws About Dangerous Dog Breeds in Georgia

The Georgian communities love having their furry friends running up and down. However, the numerous cases of Dog biting in the state force the government to enforce specific laws on dangerous dog breeds.

A dog bites you if it thinks you pose a threat to its owner’s home or the property where it resides. But did you know there are laws you need to be aware of depending on your state? The same way there are strict laws on gambling in casinos such as Sloto, there are also regulations on owning a dog.

This article will discuss all the legislation that applies to dangerous dog breeds in Georgia. Please remember, though, that if the incident does occur, both the dog’s owner and the person who was attacked have a right to a just intervention. The victim of the attack could hire a personal injury attorney to oversee their case. The owner may also take similar action if the dog was hurt during the process.

What Determines if a Dog Breed is Dangerous?

A dog breed to be considered dangerous is dependent on a few constraints:

    • Its temperament.
    • Its behavior when aggressive.
    • The power it has to hurt other dogs and people.
    • The size of the dog.
    • If the statistics on the breed bite cases are on the higher end.

An additional factor that may lead to a dangerous dog will be if it is brought up in an unhealthy environment. For instance, studies show that dogs owned by people with psychopathic tendencies are more aggressive than others. Such individuals tend to train their canines to attack, steal, and disturb people in the community.

    Dangerous Dog breeds Georgia Laws

Georgian families love their animal companions, with almost half the population having a pet in their household. The good news is that no one is prohibited from having any dog breed as their preferred pick. But there are restrictions. These laws are localized depending on where you reside in Georgia, Atlanta. Here are some of the areas with dangerous dog breeds under Georgia law restrictions:

    Dawson

In Dawson, the laws point out that a vicious dog has the following characteristics:

    • It can puncture a person’s skin with its teeth without provocation.
    • It has a reputation for attacking, biting, or hurting other living things without justification due to disposition, upbringing, or training.
    • It has injured other living things without being provoked one or more times.
    • It poses a physical threat to people or domestic animals by engaging in one or more vicious attacks without provocation.

In Dawson, the pit bull is deemed dangerous based on these constraints. Owners must constrain the dogs in cars or on a leash when off-property. Users are also urged to have complete control using voice control when in public.

    Clarkston

Residents in Clarkston with pit bulls and rottweilers must have their dogs on a leash when they go to dog parks. These two dog breeds tend to have powerful jaws, enough to drop a fully grown adult and bite viciously through the flesh.

Pit bull attacks are damaging because of their size, power, and tenacity. Pit bulls can also grip their prey with their tremendously powerful jaw. Children are the subjects at the highest risk of a pit bull’s attack.

Rottweilers are territorial dogs, and without a committed owner, the Rottweiler’s heightened hostility, big size, and muscular build can be dangerous. They attack anyone on command because they are incredibly devoted.

This law in Clarkston ensures that these two dog breeds are contained whenever they are in public spaces such as a dog park. It is to keep other dog owners and animals safe.

    Lyons

In Lyons, the pit bull is also considered a dangerous dog breed. A dangerous dog in Lyons, Atlanta, is based on whether the animal has a propensity, tendency, or disposition to attack, hurt, or pose any danger to people and other pets.

A dog that has several cases of attacks is also categorized in this section. Blended offsprings from the Staffordshire bull terrier and American Staffordshire terrier are included in this category.

If you are the owner of a pit bull that causes trouble, you are guilty of any unlawful act and are punishable by Lyons’ law. Your dog cannot run wild without a leash. This is punishable with cash penalties.

At home, your dog must be enclosed with a fence. Outside, these dogs are prohibited from all city parks and buildings unleashed unless they are guide dogs for a disabled individual.

    West Point

West Point has specific requirements that highlight dangerous and vicious dog ownership separate.

In these laws, dangerous canines are classified as being able to puncture someone’s skin, kill another pet, or have any aggressive mannerisms like growling and barking. A vicious dog is one that has bitten or attacked someone badly.

Of all the regions in Georgia, Atlanta, West Point has the most extensive list of dangerous dog breeds in Georgia. The dog breeds deemed hazardous are:

    • Rottweilers
    • Presa Canarios
    • Doberman Pinschers
    • Wolf hybrids
    • Pit bulls
    • German Shepherds
    • Chows

One law indicates that once your dog is deemed a danger to the public by a law enforcement officer, it is impounded right away. In West Point, an attack, even within the owner’s property, are punishable by law.

The dog cannot leave the property unattended, unleashed, or unmuzzled. If caught outside, it is impounded. The owner has 21 days to claim the canine. And suppose there were any fees on damages, they incur it.

In the case of vicious dogs, the owner must have a liability insurance cover of at least $100,000, and the registration of these dogs is a must.

Exemptions are on police dogs when someone abuses the dog and if it was a trespassing incident. Suppose you have a criminal record; you can never own any of the above vicious breeds unless specified.
