Police have stopped a shop in Wales from selling an illegal version of popular drink Prime. It was taken away as part of a wider haul of products including illegal tobacco and vapes that came to the attention of the authorities.
Posting on their Facebook page, the North Flintshire branch of North Wales Police said a joint operation was conducted with Trading Standards to crack down on the sale of illegal items locally. Images were put up alongside the post from a shop showing a large quantity of illegal tobacco, vapes and Prime hydration drinks that were seized.
The identity of the store has not been disclosed.
The drinks were said to be the American version of the product which has been banned from being sold in the UK. The police’s social media post explained this is due to them containing “prohibited additives”.
The images showed the items were bagged up in order to be taken away by the authorities. Flintshire Council, on behalf of Trading Standards, raised concerns in February 2023 about a “surge” in the sales of illegal vapes over the past year.
Discussing the matter previously, a spokesperson said that vapes, e-cigarettes and their refill containers are regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and must comply with tank capacity and nicotine strength limits. Their labels must display manufacturer details and health warnings, and failing to do so could lead to prosecution.
The law also makes it illegal to sell nicotine-containing vape products to anyone under 18.
