Everton shop faces resistance over plans to sell alcohol

Merseyside Police have objected to plans for a shop in Everton to begin selling alcohol over concerns the area is already plagued by youths “street drinking and intimidating residents”.

Nathan’s All In One, on Breck Road, has applied to sell alcohol from 9am to 11pm seven days a week.

Premises owner Vaikunthanathan Sithamparapillai’s application is set to go before a virtual meeting of the council’s licensing sub-committee next week.

In a letter objecting to the plans, Merseyside Police’s licensing officer Samantha Cushion said allowing the shop to sell alcohol would undermine the licensing department’s aims to prevent crime and disorder.

Ms Cushion said: “The proposed premise sits within a densely populated residential area that has been identified as an area of concern.

“This area already suffers from high levels of youth alcohol related Anti-Social Behaviour including ‘street drinking’ issues, with the associated crime and disorder problems.

“There are a number of supported-living properties within the area that accommodate persons who are suffering from drug and alcohol dependencies and further availability of alcohol would have a detrimental effect on these residents.”

The objection also says that the police are aware of “existing problems of public nuisance in this area for local residents and general members of the public which includes groups of youths gathering, intimidating residents and street drinking”.

A report submitted to councillors with details of Mr Sithamparapillai’s application says: “The owner would just like to add some alcohol sales to allow the business to develop.

“The focus of the shop will continue as a general convenience store with the proposed alcohol sales just being a part of the overall business.”

The council’s licensing sub-committee is set to decide on the application next Wednesday (27 May).
