A long-standing family-run convenience store in Coventry is preparing to close its doors after more than five decades at the heart of the local community, marking the end of an era for generations of shoppers who relied on the business not just for groceries and newspapers, but also companionship and everyday support.
Charlie and Smitty Ganatra, owners of Ganatra's News on Hollyfast Road, will retire this weekend after serving the area for 54 years. The shop will close permanently today (May 9).
The couple took over the business in 1972, continuing the legacy established by Charlie’s parents, and have since become a familiar and trusted presence within the neighbourhood.
Reflecting on the decision to retire, Charlie said the store had always been about more than retail.
"Our late parents instilled strong values in us, and we're proud to have carried on their legacy for so many years," Charlie told BBC. "We've been honoured to be part of this community," he added, "it has given us so much".
Smitty said the people who have walked through the door over the past half-century had become "almost like a family".
Over the last few days, customers visited the store to share memories and say goodbye.
The business also has a notable family connection to television through with Charlie’s younger brother, actor Nitin Ganatra, best known for playing Masood Ahmed in EastEnders. Nitin reportedly had previously helped in the shop when needed.
“Whenever he had a chance, he'd come here to give me a hand,” Charlie told BBC. “He'd get up with me at 4am to do the papers.”
The closure reflects the wider challenges facing many independent convenience retailers across the UK, where long-serving family businesses continue to play a vital social role within local communities while also navigating rising operating costs and changing shopping habits.
Although stepping away from retail, the couple said they intend to remain active in retirement, with plans including visiting India for the first time in 25 years and spending more time with family and grandchildren.
