Coca-Cola has confirmed production on Zico will be discontinued by the end of year

Coca-Cola has announced they are discontinuing their coconut water Zico within the next few months – seven years after buying the brand.

The decision comes in line with the company streamlining more of its product offerings and focusing on its best-selling brands to help ease the strain on supply chains.

Less than three months ago, Coca-Cola ended production on their juice and smoothie brand Odwalla along with other “zombie brands” also set to be discontinued who have been identified as not performing well.

Brands that may go include Diet Coke Feisty Cherry, Coke Life, Northern Neck Ginger Ale and Delaware Punch, which are all “under review,” said a spokesperson.

A statement issued by Coca-Cola said: “This decision was not made lightly and comes at a time when we are focused on delivering on our consumers’ wants and needs while driving scaled growth across a total beverage portfolio.”

Coca-Cola bought Zico in 2013 in a bid attract consumers outside of their popular soft drink range and the increasing trend of coconut water drinks.

Between 2004 and 2013 coconut water sales nearly doubled but is beginning to see a decline in sales in-store with a 22% drop in 2015.
