Almost one in three Brits are likely to drink more than usual over the bank holiday weekend, a survey has revealed.
The poll, conducted by alcohol-free specialists Eisberg, showed that the biggest bank holiday boozers are 25-34 year-olds, with 38 per cent saying they indulge in more drinking than a typical weekend, compared to just 26 per cent of 18-24-year-olds.
Although Christmas, birthdays and holidays are popular times for Brits to indulge in a glass of wine or two, bank holidays – especially sunny ones with 31 per cent of people drinking more in the sun – are increasingly popular for brits to enjoy drinking with friends and family.
However, not all Brits are set on including alcohol in their celebrations with 36 per cent describing themselves as “sober curious” as they cut down on alcohol, the poll revealed.
More people are turning to non-alcoholic options, as 30 per cent said they had become more appealing in the last 12 months, and more than half (51 per cent) had tried them.
Whilst some opt for a low/no alcohol alternative, others are simply trying to cut the amount of alcohol they consume down using popular trends like “Zebra Striping”.
“Zebra Striping is where you alternate between alcohol and alcohol-free options when drinking – it’s a great way to celebrate the long weekend without waking up with a hangover on Tuesday morning,” said Eisberg’s Dan Harwood, Managing Director of SW Wines Europe.
“Eisberg is a great alternative, because it starts life as any other fresh and fruity wine would. The alcohol is then gently removed whilst keeping the great flavour of your favourite wines.”
And if you were planning on packing up the car for a day out this August bank holiday, think again.
Day trips are set to make it the busiest bank holiday weekend on the roads since the summer of 2015, with high levels of traffic anticipated.
Dan continued: “With the August bank holiday forecasted to bring queues of traffic to our roads, why not stay home and celebrate with a bottle of wine in the garden.”
