Bira assisting with Government’s knife crime consultation

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has been granted a significant opportunity to contribute to the government’s Knife Crime Consultation, which ends this month.

Bira was asked to join the consultation to ensure that independent shops can continue to legitimately retail bladed products in a responsible manner whilst working to reduce the incidents of knife crime.

Bira is keen to highlight its commitment to protecting the sale of bladed products in a safe and trained environment enhancing the safety and security of independent shops throughout the United Kingdom.

With the recently announced large scale increases in fines for miss-selling of bladed products Bira is dedicated to equipping retailers with the knowledge to continue selling knives to but ensuring retailers are fully aware of all challenge 25 and Trading Standards

The government’s Knife Crime Consultation call for action, which runs until June 6, aims to address the growing concern of selling bladed products which could result in knife-related incidents and explore effective strategies to combat this issue.

Recognising the unique challenges faced by independent shops, Bira has been invited to provide insights and recommendations that will directly contribute to shaping policies and measures to safeguard the retail community.

Through our involvement, we aim to provide valuable insights and practical solutions that will enhance security measures, ultimately fostering a safer environment for both retailers and customers.

“Independent shops often operate in close-knit communities and serve as vital hubs for local residents. However, they can be particularly vulnerable to incidents of crime, including knife-related offences.”

Through its participation in the Knife Crime Consultation, Bira seeks to establish effective measures that not only deter criminal activities but also empower independent retailers to create safer shopping environments. By collaborating with the government, Bira aims to develop practical awareness guidelines, training programs, and support networks that enhance security measures and promote awareness among independent shops.
