National Business Crime Centre (NBCC) today (27) has launched a series of training videos which have been developed to support and protect colleagues working in the retail sector.

The animations provide shop workers with practical advice and strategies to help them manage issues that they are likely to face on a regular basis, these include dealing with and interacting with suspected shop thieves, saying no, personal safety & de-escalation and dealing with disruptive and anti-social behaviour.

ACS government relations director Edward Woodall said, “The NBCC training videos are an invaluable resource for convenience retailers and their staff for managing crime in their business and keeping store colleagues safe. We are encouraging our members to share these resources with their teams which will complement the millions of pounds that local shops invest each year in crime prevention measures.”

The 2022 Crime Report shows that on average, each store in the convenience sector spent over £5,000 on crime prevention measures including security staff, CCTV and intruder alarms.

ACS has co-ordinated with over 100 retailers and trade bodies the Home Office backed #ShopKind campaign, urging customers to be respectful of colleagues in stores. Polling conducted for the #ShopKind campaign shows that more than a third of consumers have witnessed violence and abuse against shop workers. Campaign materials for retailers are available to download on the NBCC website here.
