CJ Lang receives top health and safety award

Scottish wholesaler CJ Lang & Son has won an internationally recognised award for health and safety standards from the Royal Society for the Prevention Accidents (RoSPA).

The wholesaler for SPAR in Scotland has received a RoSPA President’s Health and Safety Award for “working hard to ensure their team members and customers get home safely to their families at the end of every working day.”

Every year, nearly 2,000 entrants vie to achieve the highest possible accolade in what is the UK’s longest-running H&S industry awards.

“This truly is a significant milestone, we have been dedicated to improving our health and safety culture across our business ensuring CJ Lang remains a safe environment for all our colleagues and customers,” Brian Straiton, Operations Director at CJ Lang, said.

“Throughout the journey, the key turning points were the development of our SharePoint system, the introduction of on-site health and safety audits and improvements in safety culture. SharePoint made us stand out as pioneers of modern health and safety management. We brought health and safety tasks to an electronic format, and this gave more transparency and efficiency to health and safety due diligence. To compliment this, the health and safety team introduced a much more personal on-site health and safety audit, giving our colleagues invaluable support on how to manage their own health and safety responsibilities.”

Colin Chapman, Distribution Director, added: “Alongside this, in our distribution centre we have taken great strides to improve our health and safety culture through improved safety observation, awareness and training for our colleagues.

“Given the additional health and safety challenges we have overcome throughout the pandemic, it’s amazing to be recognised for these efforts in such a prestigious way.”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s Achievements Director, said: “This is a fantastic and well-deserved accomplishment. All our award entrants demonstrate their unwavering commitment and passion for keeping people safe at work.

“By receiving this recognition CJ Lang join like-minded businesses and organisations worldwide, who represent the very best in their approach to Health and Safety. I would like to add my personal thanks for all the work that it has taken to secure this well-deserved award – congratulations to all those involved, who champion and drive-up Health and Safety standards every day. You are a fantastic example to others in your sector.”
