Co-op has reduced the packaging on food-to-go range and all single use plastic cutlery has been removed in favour of wooden sporks, the retailer announced on Tuesday (24).

In a bid to make 2022 Summer range range as sustainable as possible, the Co-op is reducing the amount of packaging on its food-to-go products. By reducing packaging and removing all single-use plastic cutlery in favour of wooden sporks, approximately 274 tonnes of unnecessary plastic, cardboard and film will be removed from Co-op’s stores, the retailer said.

Robert Thompson, Packaging Manager at the Co-op, said, “We’re really pleased that we’ve managed to remove a significant amount of plastic, cardboard and film on our food-to-go products, which will reduce the amount of packaging in our stores by over 270 tonnes. Our teams have worked hard to deliver what is a really positive step forward for packaging, delivering the same fantastic sandwiches and salads as sustainably as possible.”

The range also sees a reduction of meat, with eight additional vegan and vegetarian products being introduced.

The sushi products being introduced to the range include the Salmon and Prawn pack, the Vegan taster pack, the Premium Fish Selection and the Chicken and Duck Pack.

Other products being introduced to the range include Thai Bang Bang Noodle Salad, Chicken Katsu Bento Box, Halloumi Flatbread, Spinach and Pine Nut Falafel Wrap and the Coronation Chicken Sub Roll.
