More than one in four consumers (26%) said they were very concerned about the cost of purchasing essential food items increasing in 2022, a new survey has found.

Overall, 70 per cent of consumers are concerned about the cost of essential food purchases this year, according to the Post Office poll.

The survey has also found that 56 per cent of consumers are concerned about difficulties paying household bills in 2022, with more than one in five consumers responding that they are ‘very concerned’.

Over a third (36%) was concerned that their job would become more insecure this year.

“Recent weeks have been incredibly difficult for millions of people across the country with the pandemic and now looming economic uncertainty as we head into next year,” Laura Joseph, customer experience director at Post Office, commented.

“Postmasters play a vital role in the heart of their local communities. Not only are they open long hours so that people can top up their gas or electricity, they’re a friendly and reliable face with many postmasters going out of their way to support those in need.”

Post Office has recently partnered with the Trussell Trust to support people who may face poverty this winter by donating 1p to the charity for every cash withdrawal made over the counter in any of its 11,500 branches.

Since launching on 30 November, the scheme has raised £100,000 so far, and with over 1.5m over the counter cash withdrawals every week, Post Office hopes to raise £250,000 for the charity by 31 March 2022.
