A shopkeeper locked his doors to prevent a suspected thief from leaving after a bottle of wine fell out of her bag and smashed.

Police were called to BP Service Station in Daleside Road, Sneinton, following the incident at around 6.30pm on 19 October.

Believing the woman had been stealing items, the shopkeeper locked the shop doors to prevent her leaving and called the police.

Officers arrived and were told the woman had tried to steal four bottles of fabric softener and a bottle of red wine.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of theft and taken into custody, where checks found she was wanted in relation to a string of burglaries and another shop theft.

They include three burglaries at student accommodation in Player Street, Bobbers Mill, and a theft from Sainsbury’s Local in Wheeler Gate.

Detective Constable Colin Kirkup, from Nottinghamshire Police’s burglary team, said: “A 42-year-old woman is in custody following Tuesday night’s attempted shop theft in Daleside Road and detectives are also questioning her in relation to a string of burglaries and shop theft that have been reported in recent months.

“We continue to treat shop theft and burglary extremely seriously. We will not tolerate this type of offending and will always take robust action against those who commit such crimes.”
