Amazon opens second convenience store in London

Days after launching its first physical shop and first grocery store outside of the US in Ealing, London, Amazon has opened a second store in the capital near Wembley stadium.

Located at Wembley Park Boulevard, the till-less convenience store opened its doors on 16 March with the tech giant’s ‘Just Walk Out’ shopping technology, which allows customers to bag items as they go and just walk out at the end of their shopping trip, without stopping to stand in queue or check out.

Amazon has earlier said that they look forward to opening additional stores in the Greater London area.

The store features the new own brand, ‘by Amazon’, which includes a range of food products, including meat, poultry and fish, dairy, fruit and veg, bakery, freshly prepared meals and everyday essentials.

To use the Amazon Fresh store, customers have to download an app and then scan a QR code before an electronic gate swings open and allows them to browse the products.

Once they have bagged their items, customers don’t have to show a card or let anyone know, they simply walk out.

The stores, which are similar to 20 Amazon Go outlets in the US, makes use of computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning to automatically detect when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual basket, doing away with the need to scan the items in an app.
