A man who is suspected to be part of a gang that robbed a convenience store in Nuthall has been arrested soon after they made off with cash and tobacco.

The incident happened at around 10pm on 29 December at the McColls store in Ash Crescent.

A man allegedly used a hammer to intimidate the shop assistants before the gang of three men stole tobacco and cash from a safe within the store.

However, officers have been able to arrest a man moments after a report of the incident was made to Nottinghamshire Police.

After spotting a vehicle believed to be linked to the investigation, the officers stopped the car in Thornbury Way in Top Valley and arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the report.

A hammer was recovered in a search and the investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances, the police said.

“This would have undoubtedly been a terrifying experience for the victims but luckily, no one was injured in the incident,” Detective Sergeant Luke Todd, of Nottinghamshire Police, said.

“Officers did a fantastic job to quickly locate and investigate a suspicious van believed to be linked to police enquiries and we are pleased to be questioning a man in connection with this report.

“Robbery is a serious offence and as a force we will always thoroughly investigate reports made to us.”

A witness and CCTV appeal has been issued, urging anyone with relevant information to get in touch with Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 676 of 29 December 2020.
