One Stop store set for Hull city centre with high street funding

A branch of the One Stop convenience store is set to open in Hull city centre with the help of Humber high street funding.

The store, set to open in 4-6 Silver Street, will open seven days a week and provide groceries, household goods, on the go meals and a parcel pick up and delivery service.

It is also set to offer made to order sandwiches from maker Stacked and is due to open in February.

Ragunathan Selvachandran, the businessman behind the plans, said Hull City Council had been “incredibly supportive” of the project.

He added it would be of great benefit to residents living in new flats and apartments built in the city centre in recent years.

The opening comes after the council previously refused a licence for Selvachandran to sell alcohol all hours in the store in August after Humberside Police raised public order objections.

The Hull branch’s opening was supported by £182,000 of funding from the Humber High Street Challenge Fund.

The money came from a £2.23 million government Local Growth Fund under the Northern Powerhouse initiative, with the funds managed by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Selvachandran said: “I have had businesses in the Old Town since 2004. Things were difficult until Hull became City of Culture in 2017, at which point there was a huge turnaround with more people coming into the Old Town.

“When the Whitefriargate grant scheme came about, I saw an opportunity to be part of bringing life back to some of the unoccupied buildings in the Old Town.

“There is a lot of regeneration happening in the area now, including the creation of flats and residential accommodation, resulting in the need for more amenities for these residents.

“Hull City Council has been incredibly supportive, without the council’s support and guidance I would not have been able to deliver this project, which I’m sure will greatly benefit the city centre, especially the increasing amount of residents that are making this stunning part of the city their home.”

Council Deputy Leader and investment and economic regeneration portfolio holder Daren Hale said: “This is brilliant news for the Old Town. We are seeing more and more people choosing to make this part of the city their home, so it’s fantastic that there will soon be a nationally recognised convenience store right on their doorstep.

“This project compliments the vision we have for the area, of being a vibrant place for people to live, work and play, as well as complimenting both established and newly arrived businesses in the Old Town.”

One Stop franchise director Matt Elliot said: “According to research, people believe the most positive impact in an area is the addition of a convenience store so we’re looking forward to seeing the effect a brand-new One Stop store, offering a whole host of products and services, will have on the ongoing regeneration of the area.”
