News UK maintains retail terms with The Sun cover price rise

News UK has announced a cover price increase of to all editions of The Sun and The Sun on Sunday, retaining the retail margins.

The increase of 5p for Mondays to Fridays and 10 p for weekends will take effect on 1 August. The change will also affect the Scottish editions the paper.

“These combined price changes are forecast to deliver an extra £25 million in revenue through retailers’ tills and an additional £5.5 million in margin over the next 12 months,” Neil Spencer, retail sales director at News UK, said in a letter to retailers.

The Federation of Independent Retailers (NFRN) has welcomed the decision.

“We are pleased that unlike other publishers of late that News UK is accompanying its price rises with pro rata terms,” commented Stuart Reddish, national president of NFRN

“Members will be relieved it recognises the extremely demanding trading environment that independent retailers are currently operating in, along with an understanding that margins must be maintained when cover prices rise.”

Publishers Reach and Newsquest have recently announced cuts to retailer margins when increasing cover prices. News UK has in June announced a cut in retailer margin with the price changes for The Times and The Sunday Times.
