Scottish shoppers need to mandatorily wear a face covering at retail stores from today (10 July).

The regulation is part of the Phase 3 of Scotland’s route map out of coronavirus lockdown.

Physical distancing of two metres remains the law, but the government said exceptions will be allowed once appropriate mitigations are in place in retail settings and on public transport.

The guidance issued today strongly recommends shop staff to “wear face coverings even when 2m physical distancing is applied.”

However, there is an exemption for staff where 2m physical distancing or Perspex screens are in place.

In response to the measure, Costcutter Supermarkets Group (CSG) said it will be providing free unbranded signage to any Scottish independent retailer to help communicate the new regulations.

The symbol group has provided free printed POS materials to all its Scottish retailers.

“We’re also extending our provision of free unbranded signage for any Scottish independent retailer, to ensure that their shoppers know that face coverings will be mandatory and that the two metre social distancing measures remain in place,” said Sean Russell, marketing director at CSG.

The materials can be downloaded from the CSG website.
