Contactless till installed remotely at Cornish store

A retailer in Cornwall has added a self check-out till to his store, and he got it installed with no face-to-face contact.

Gary Batten, who owns two stores in the St Austell area of Cornwall, went for the improvement, not just because of the prevailing social distancing measures. He thinks this is the future.

“Self-scan is the future, especially with rising staff costs and the younger generation preferring less contact and this is the time to invest in our stores,” he said.

“We sold the self-scan as a way to keep our customers safer while shopping and they have actually welcomed this change.”

The Nisa retailer worked with the EPOS engineers from the symbol group, who are working remotely, to get the equipment delivered and installed.

“Not having a visual overview and the ability to physically see the kit can be difficult during an install, but challenge accepted,” commented Chris Vose, Nisa’s senior engineer.

“This being our first remote install it was not without its difficulties, but I was able to guide Gary through the process remotely and overcame any issues that came up.”

Gary added: “I knew that a self-checkout was what we needed and it’s good to know that it’s not impossible during these uncertain times.”
