Business Secretary Alok Sharma has hailed the vital role played by the retail sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an open letter issued yesterday (8 April), Sharma said the sector has been making crucial contribution in tackling the crisis.

“The goods that you supply make a real difference to our ability to get through this national crisis together, from the food and medicines that people need, to items ordered online to support home working, education or entertainment,” he wrote.

“Whether you’re working in a shop, large or small, or in a distribution centre or supply chain supporting retailers operating online, I would like to convey my heartfelt and personal thanks for everything that you are doing to support our joint national effort.”

Trade bodies have appreciated the welcome gesture.

James Lowman, chief executive of the ACS, said: “We’re pleased that the Secretary of State has recognised the vital role that our colleagues have played in keeping communities connected and providing customers with vital products.

Stuart Reddish, national president of the NFRN, added: “Independent retailers are working extremely hard during these unprecedented times. They are going above and beyond so they can continue serving their communities and I am very pleased to see that the business secretary is recognising their efforts and sacrifices.”

Sharma has also outlined the support available for retailers in the letter, adding that he will maintain the regular engagement with the industry and union leaders during the ongoing crisis.
