ACS seeks government fund to compensate local shops hit by Covid-19 crisis

Notice posted on Facebook by Newport Village Stores in Saffron Walden on 12 march 2020.

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has sought urgent measures from the government to support local shops handle the impact of Covid-19.

The key asks include a government fund to compensate businesses impacted by the virus; automatic deferral of VAT, employers NICs, business rates, PAYE and corporation tax for at least six months; and subsidising wages for people laid off as a direct result of the outbreak.

James Lowman, ACS chief executive, said: “Convenience stores are a lifeline for the communities that they serve and they play a crucial role in times of increased demand, particularly as more people isolate at home as a result of coronavirus.

“We need the government to introduce measures to support convenience stores to enable them to continue providing vital services and products to their customers.”
