An ATM has been stolen during a ram raid on Baldock High Street on Friday (14), leaving the front part of Costcutter convenience store badly damaged.

As per local reports, Costcutter convenience store on 1 High Street, Baldock, had the front completely destroyed during the raid in the early hours of Friday when the ATM from its front was stolen.

A spokesperson for the police force said, “Police were called shortly before 12.15am on Friday 14 January following an incident in Baldock High Street.

“It was reported that a ram raid had occurred at Costcutter and that an ATM was stolen.”

Herts Police added a Land Rover was left at the scene.

“Our enquiries are continuing to trace those involved in the burglary. We are aware of footage circulating online of the incident and would ask anyone who has this to please contact us directly via email. This could greatly assist our ongoing enquiries,” Detective Constable Beth Talbot, from the North Herts Local Crime Unit, said.

An eyewitness who lives just opposite the shop said she heard a loud bang and thought at first it was a lorry that had lost control.

“looked out my window and could see a vehicle inside the shop. I then thought it was a bad accident and was about to rush out to help when I realised their panicked shouting was because they were actually using the vehicle to tow out the cash machine,” local reports quoted the neighbour as saying.

“It took about four minutes from the time they ripped the front off to when they eventually left. Once they left I called the police and went outside to check the damage and see if anyone was hurt as I didn’t know if anyone had still been in the store,” she said, adding that “the police arrived very quickly and cordoned off the scene.
