Euro Garages withdraws planning application for Cornwall petrol station

Plans to build a new petrol station and drive-through outlets on one of the busiest roads in St Austell have been withdrawn by Euro Garages.

A planning application had been submitted to Cornwall Council last year to build the new facility on land at Holmbush Road.

The plans, which included a convenience store, a drive-through coffee shop and a drive-through restaurant, had been put forward by Euro Garages.

It was suggested that the site could be the location of Cornwall’s first Starbucks drive-through outlet.

However last week it was revealed that the planning application has now been withdrawn.

Cornwall Council highways officers had raised an objection to the plans saying they did not believe they showed a safe and suitable access for all road users.

St Austell Town Council had also objected due to “poor access onto a busy road” and increased air pollution.

When the plans were submitted they attracted a number of objections from local residents, most of them concerned about the impact the new outlets could have on an already busy route.

Objecting on the council website Karen Sheppard said: “We strongly object to this application the traffic is busy enough, coming out of our drive is a nightmare as it is which is right opposite the proposed site.”

Phil Best added: “The A390 is already a highly congested road and there are plenty of fast food outlets, supermarkets and petrol filling stations within just a few miles. This development will only increase congestion and pollution in an already sensitive area.

“The development may create new jobs but it also puts existing jobs at risk through over competition with the nearby businesses.”

It is not known why the planning application was withdrawn.
