    The Evolution of Roulette

Roulette is a classic casino game and remains one of the most popular games at the casino. Today, punters can play from the comfort of home with real dealers on live roulette games found at online casinos, but it wasn’t always this convenient to play.

Roulette is a game where players wager on where the ball will land after spinning around a roulette wheel. They can place bets on the numbers outright, groups of numbers, the colour of the number it will land on (red or black) or if the number will be odd or even. There are lots of markets to bet on within roulette, which adds to the excitement.

    Who Invented Casino Roulette?

Roulette was invented somewhat by accident when a French mathematician and scientist called Blaise Pascal was trying to create a machine. Although he failed in making his machine work, he did create arguably the most popular casino game ever made. This was back in 1655 and during the following decades, roulette wheels included both a single 0 and double 0. The French eventually disregarded the game with two 0s to keep punters happy in the 19th century.

    Why Are the 0s Important?

The 0s are crucial on a roulette wheel because they decide how big of a house edge the roulette wheel offers. The 0s are not factored into the odds on all the aforementioned markets. A house edge is the margins that favour the casino, making sure the casino makes a profit over thousands of roulette spins. Of course, punters get lucky and the casino will lose throughout those spins, but overall the more 0s on the wheel, the more the odds will favour the casino.

Interestingly, when roulette first arrived in America during the end of the 18th century (thanks to French migrants), the American casino added an American Eagle to the wheel as well, which was like a third 0. This didn’t go down well and the casinos had to revert back to the 0 and double 0 only. American roulette today still differs because it has the double 0 while ‘European roulette’ only has one 0.

    Playing Roulette in 2020

Since these early adoptions of roulette, nothing much has changed to the game itself apart from it is now available on casino websites. The American version still has better odds for the casino with a greater house edge, whereas the European version remains more appealing to players.

If you want to know how to play live roulette it is quite simple. The game works just like roulette on any other casino site but a live roulette host will spin the wheel from a studio (or sometimes a casino floor). All the rules remain the same and the whole experience is usually considered better – more like a trip to the casino itself.

You do have to pay more attention than playing on computerised online roulette games because the game will move at lifelike speed and not at your own pace. Yet, most people prefer to play live roulette games in 2020.

Is there a strategy to playing Roulette?

Roulette is a lot like slot gaming because it involves very little strategy. That is not to say there isn’t any strategy involved at all – we will address this soon – but much of the game is in the hands of fate and luck. This is easy to see when you compare roulette to blackjack and poker. These latter games include a lot more strategy and may be better if you want to try and become a professional gambler. But the roulette wheel is still one of the most fun games on the casino floor!

Are There Any Famous Roulette Players?

Yes, there are many people who have had their stories at the roulette wheel shared. But one roulette player sticks in the mind more than most. A man from the UK called Ashley Revell sold everything he owned in 2014 and headed to Vegas for one single spin on the roulette wheel to wager all his money. It was such an intriguing story that TV cameras followed Mr Revell and made a series about him. It is even rumoured that the story inspired Simon Cowell to create the UK hit show, Red or Black.

And we know what you are thinking, did he win? He bet on red and number 7 red came out.

Funnily enough, Ashley Revell has since made the news again in his local area for finding a Bronze-Age hoard in Kent, UK.

What Is a Famous Roulette Strategy?

One of the most famous roulette strategies, which is not for the faint-hearted, is called the Martingale Theory. It works in a way to guarantee no loses over the whole session but it may require huge capital even if you start betting really small. If you bet on red or black, and every time you lose you then re-place your bet with double the amount wagered previous, eventually you are bound to be correct and you will earn your money back at the least.

However, even small bets like $10 can turn into scary amounts wagered. If you were to be wrong after nine spins, the next spin would be for $5,120 and you would have wagered over $10,000. Yikes!
