Tangerine Confectionery has invested £7.5 million into its York factory on Low Poppleton Lane to increase production capacity by 30 percent.

Two new production lines will allow an additional 2,000 tonnes of retailer own-brand confectionery and Big Bear Confectionery’s popular brands Fox’s and Poppets to be produced at the factory.

Both Tangerine and Big Bear are subsidiaries of Irish firm Valeo Foods Group, which merged the two confectionery units to form Valeo Confectionery UK earlier this year.

“Our York site has a long heritage which goes back to the 1960’s and we’re thrilled it’s becoming home to more of the UK’s best loved sweet brands with the addition of Fox’s and Poppets,” said Mark Townsley, factory general manager at Tangerine Confectionery.

The expansion, set to be completed in October, will create 90 new jobs in the region.

BBC in March reported that a Big Bear site in Leicester, that makes Fox’s Glacier mints and employs around 200 people, could close under merger plans.
