Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced immediate relief on business rates and council tax for those affected by the recent flooding in parts of central and northern England.

Businesses and households which have been intensely affected by the flooding will be eligible for 100 percent relief on their business rates and council tax for at least the next 3 months.

The measure was announced following the first meeting of the cross-Whitehall Flood Recovery Taskforce yesterday (14 November), chaired by Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick.

“Hard-working people and businesses who have experienced intense flooding should not have to worry about paying council tax and business rates while they focus on their recovery,” Jenrick said.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has earlier announced funding for a Business Recovery Grant to support the flood-affected businesses. This will provide up to £2,500 per eligible small and medium-sized businesses which have suffered severe impacts from the floods that cannot be recovered from insurance.
