Prime Minister Boris Johnson has condemned violence against shop workers and agreed to meet with a group of shop workers who have experienced violence at work.
At Prime Ministers’ Questions, Alex Norris, Labour (Co-op) MP for Nottingham North reported that every day an estimated 280 shop workers will be victims of violence at work.
Mr Norris reported that at his local Co-op a staff member was hit with a glass bottle.
“The Co-op is a good employer and wants that to stop,” said Mr Norris. “So they and other local retailers engaged with the government’s call to evidence around violence towards shop staff.”
He continued: “Seven and a half months later they are awaiting a response. Prime Minister, will you commit today to publish your response to the call to evidence and will you meet with me and a group of shop workers who have experienced violence at work to hear about what happened to them?”
Replying, Boris Johnson said: “I certainly will make that undertaking to the honourable gentleman. I’m glad he raised it. We should not tolerate crimes of violence against shop workers or indeed anybody else.”
