Armed thugs are jailed after brutal film of store raid is shown to court
29/07/2010
THIS is the terrifying moment that an innocent shopkeeper found himself staring down the barrels of two guns.
Bhavesh Patel came face to face with the hooded raiders after they rushed into his Leicester off licence.
Shocking cctv clips showed the moment one of the robbers hit out at the trader, brutally smashing him over the head with the barrel of his gun.
The men then made Mr Patel give them his £5000 Rolex wristwatch before escaping into the street.
The footage also showed two accomplices keeping guard outside the store ready to give the alarm.
The film was played in Leicester Crown Court before the four men were jailed.
Zaydene Shahadat, 21, received seven years for robbery. Jason Wright, 23, who pistol-whipped Mr Patel, was jailed for five years. Lookouts, Sanchez Zampaladus, 29, and Judah Hunte, 30, were each sentenced to four years.
Afterwards, Mr Patel, 33, who suffered head injuries in the attack, described the sentences as ‘good news.’ He said security procedures have now been tightened and that in future neither himself nor staff will work alone in the store at any time.
Prosecutor Mark Hurd said the weapons were an air pistol and an imitation handgun that looked real.
After passing sentence, judge Mark Rogers said: ‘This robbery was truly shocking and let’s not lose sight of the impact on Mr Patel, who was providing a valuable service to the community in relatively vulnerable circumstances.
‘He was without any real degree of protection or back up, apart from the cctv coverage which has been invaluable in this case.
‘What must he have felt when confronted with these two armed masked men? It is difficult to imagine a more frightening experience for someone in his position.”
